Ground deformation studies are important in many fields such as earthquake engineering, groundwater resources management, mining and volcanology. The science can be considered in its infancy, but applications of global positioning systems (GPS) and interforemetric synthetic aperture radar (INSAR) have opened up new vistas in understanding ground deformation due to natural causes such as fault movements or to human activities such as unabated exploitation of groundwater.
